But critics note that the SAVE overhaul was itself rushed, and that states already have multiple tools — including the more accurate Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements' counterpart, the SAVE program's own limitations, and the E-Verify system — to handle this task. The urgency, they argue, is manufactured to achieve a political goal before voters head to the polls. What makes this case so significant is that it forces the Supreme Court to weigh procedural and substantive concerns under extreme time pressure. The Court has historically been wary of changing election rules close to an election, citing the Purcell principle, which cautions against judicial interference in the run-up to voting.
